About Us
Redefining Jiujitsu Apparel with Passion and Purpose
At Taranta, we embarked on a journey to make the best grappling gear; apparel that we wanted to see but no one was making. Our other goal is to expand the reach of jiu jitsu and give back to the many people who have donated blood, sweat, and tears to the art.
Our story began a only few years into our jiu-jitsu journey, but we quickly realized there was a significant gap in the market – the lack of high-quality grappling shorts. We were disappointed by the sea of subpar shorts resembling outdated board shorts, offering neither the right fit or designs. To stand out from the crowd, most companies resorted to flashy graphics reminiscent of an early 2000s bar fight. This simply wasn't the solution we were looking for.
Driven by our passion for jiujitsu and our commitment to excellence, we decided to create our own line of training shorts and rashguards.
While our original vision entailed launching a complete line of Made in America apparel, we encountered various challenges along the way. Sourcing and manufacturing apparel in the United States proved to be an intricate task, and after spending a lot of time and money we realized that if we were every going to cause a shift we had to get started. We begrudgingly took our custom designs over seas to get the ball rolling, but our goal is to be able to bring manufacturing back to America.
Taranta is not just a brand; it's a community of passionate jiu jitsu practitioners united by a shared love for the sport. We invite you to join us on this thrilling ride as we continue to innovate, create, and redefine the world of jiu jitsu apparel.
Thank you for being a part of our story. The best is yet to come.
Stay tuned, train hard, and let's achieve greatness together!
Tarantula

The legend of the tarantula has its roots in Southern Italy, where it was believed that being bitten by a tarantula spider could cause a condition known as "tarantism."
nicky taranta
Like many jiujitsu practitioners, Nicky fell in love with the sport instantaneously. Over the years the infatuation with the sport started to seep out into all aspects of his life, culminating with a move to Austin, TX to train with some of the best grapplers in the world.
The Legend of the Tarantula
While the name Taranta comes from our family from Sāo Paulo, Brazil, the name is actually Italian, and translates to Tarantula.
The legend of the tarantula has its roots in Southern Italy, where it was believed that being bitten by a tarantula spider could cause a condition known as "tarantism." This condition was said to involve intense restlessness, anxiety, and a compulsion to dance wildly in an attempt to sweat out the spider's venom.
According to the legend, the only way to cure tarantism was through a specific type of music and dance called the "tarantella." The tarantella was a frenzied and energetic dance, often accompanied by music played on traditional instruments such as the tambourine and the accordion.
It was believed that each tarantula bite required a specific type of tarantella to cure, depending on the species of spider and the time of year. The music and dance were said to be so powerful that they could cure not only tarantism but also other illnesses and maladies.
Today, the tarantella dance is still performed in Italy and has become a cultural tradition associated with weddings and other celebrations. While the belief in tarantism has largely faded away, the legend of the tarantula and the power of the tarantella lives on as a fascinating piece of folklore
While we personally resonate with the name (partially because it's our own), we see a huge parallel between the legend of the tarantula and the sport of jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu is both the spider and the dance. Once bitten by the art form, it becomes an obsessive madness that overtakes you, infecting every aspect of your life.
All you want to do is talk about jiu jitsu and train jiu jitsu. You're friends get tired of hearing about you rolling around on padded mats in your pajamas. They probably abandon you and now all of your friends are your brothers and sisters on the mats, your fellow infected.
While training can help ease the burden of the infatuation, there is only one known cure that many swear by (getting your blue belt), but this isn't always enough to break the grip of you.
At Taranta we have taken our jiu jitsu obsession to the next level, and have obsessed about everything on and off the mats. We have spent an insane amount of time making sure every aspect of our products are just right, from fit and feel, to focusing on American manufacturing.
Our current assortment of products is the best we can do based on our current experience and knowledge, but we will continue to innovate and level up our products and your experience.
About Nicky
In 2018, Nicky found himself seeking a new path, lifting weights had lost its allure and the mundane quest to lift a few more pounds no longer inspired him. He craved a fresh challenge thats when fate led him to a local jiu jitsu school, where he took the plunge and signed a 6-month contract without hesitation.
During his wife's visit to Brazil, Nicky seized the opportunity to immerse himself in jiu jitsu, dedicating an entire month to daily training. The moment he stepped onto the mat, he felt an indescribable connection, and from that point on, his heart belonged to jiu jitsu.
Drawing from his past experience running a clothing brand during college, he pondered how he could contribute to jiu jitsu community. A revelation struck him: there was a void in the market for premium grappling shorts, and he saw an opportunity to bridge the gap.
As the relentless grip of his corporate accounting job began to stifle his happiness, Nicky made the decision to pursue his passions and breathe life into his vision. Thus, Taranta was born. Guided by a relentless dedication to quality, authenticity, and innovation, Nicky embarked on a transformative journey that led him to the heart of jiu jitsu in Austin, TX.
